Apple optimistic as iPhone sales gain traction

But earnings for Q4 reveal historical decline

stronger than ever - Cook

Apple stood at the top with investors last night [28 October 2013] after insinuating that earnings could begin to grow again as traction increase in iPhone sales. Although the company recorded its first fall in profits from the year 2001, with earnings, Q4 $7.5 billion compared with $8.2 billion last year [2012], CEO Tim Cook Apple insisted it was "stronger than ever" and would consider returning more cash to shareholders in early 2014. Analysts had feared that the cheapest model of the iPhone 5 c would evil, but the total sales of iPhones came in $33.8 million in the quarter, up 26 percent over the year.

Shares in the Cupertino giant fell four percent in trading after the time initially but then recovered to earn as much as one percent, as Apple explained that margins would be close to 38.5 percent if not for income deferred gift of software.

Apple shares are trading still below its record of $702 but have increased in approximately a fifth part 20 in the past three months. Last night closed at $529, less than 1 percent on the day.

BBM turns into smash app hit for BlackBerry

AppId is over the quota AppId is over the quota

Over 10m downloads of BBM for Android and iPhone in the 1st day

incredible launch for BBM - bocking

In just 24 hours after its release BlackBerry‘s IM [Instant Messaging] client – BBM (BlackBerry Messenger), was been downloaded over ten million times by Android and iPhone users. We reckon like Blackberry itself that this must be one of the best single-day openings for a mobile app to date. Um. So, why didn’t BlackBerry do this before? Anyway, BBM rose through the rankings of Apple’s iTunes App Store to become the Number One free app in no fewer than 75 countries in that period. Significantly this included areas outside North American such as the UK, Indonesia and the Middle East. The company finally gave some clues as to the reason for the delays over the launch – every BBM user has a unique ID.

Here at GoMo News, we couldn’t work out why it took the Canadian company over one month to re-commence distribution of the BBM client.

That was after a pre-release version of the Android client got downloaded by around one million Android users.

The reason may be this … the company revealed that, “Every BBM user has a unique PIN that maintains privacy, so users are not required to ever give out their phone number or email address to a new or casual contact.”

Which is very definitely a great USP (Unique Selling Point). GoMo News rather suspects, however, that when the bootleg version of the Android app got out, everybody ended up with the same ID.

Which would have destroyed the whole point for BlackBerry. Interestingly, th BBM client for iOS must have been more intelligent/advance because BlackBerry doesn’t appear to have penalised those who ‘side-loaded’ it.

Or in other words, found a way to install the legitimate BBM for iPhone app on their handset.

Andrew Bocking, executive vp for BBM at BlackBerry, (previously he was just described as ‘head’ of BBM), explained, “This has been an incredible launch for BBM across Android and iPhone devices.”

” The mobile messaging market is full of opportunity for BBM. We intend to be the leading private social network for everyone who needs the immediate communication and collaboration of instant messaging combined with the privacy, control and reliability delivered through BBM.”

Importantly, Android and iPhone users will have access to BBM Voice and Video calling, as well as the new community building tool – BBM Channels – in the near future, BlackBerry says.

Some observers have pooh-poohed the release of BBM versus the likes of WhatsApp because there is no Windows version of BBM (but there is for WhatsApp).

But look at some of these stats … BBM has over 60 million monthly active customers, with 51 million people lus using BBM an average of 90 minutes per day.

Currently, BBM customers collectively send and receive more than 10 billion messages each day, nearly twice as many messages per user per day as compared to other mobile messaging apps.

Almost half of BBM messages are read within 20 seconds of being received – indicating how truly engaged BBM customers are.

Now think what a fantastic opportunity BBM presents for mobile marketers. The open rate for BBM users is higher than even SMS/text.

We’ll wait to see exactly how BlackBerry decides to monetise BBM and whether it will involve advertising.

Of course, if GoMo News were to be advising BlackBerry on their PR and brand re-enforcement …

We wouldn’t let such a brill story appear on the same day as the company updated BB10 – the very latest version of its mobile OS.

Mobile ad specialist BuzzCity moves to desktop

AppId is over the quota AppId is over the quota

Not a backward step it declares

cross-device surfing now the norm -Dr Lai

In what some might regard as a kind of retromove or backward step, mobile ad specialist BuzzCity has announced that from Q1 2014, it will offer its clients advertising opportunities on the desktop. The company claims this change is driven by demand from media buyers and advertisers, as well as the growing consumer appetite for cross-device surfing. From Q1 2014, BuzzCity will be offering online advertising across PCs and laptops, in addition to its already established mobile advertising platform. BuzzCity expects this strategy will help to power its next phase of growth.

BuzzCity claims that it decided on this new strategic direction as a result of the close working relationships it has with its advertisers and media buyer/planning agencies.

“Cross-device surfing has now become the norm,” explained Dr KF Lai, BuzzCity’s CEO.

“The desktop and laptop remains and will continue to grow, alongside mobile, as part of the multi-device- world in which we live and work.”

According to recent BuzzCity research, 27 per cent of mobile users stated that they were planning to buy a laptop or PC in the next 12 months.

In this multi-device world, user behaviour is now better understood and valued in the context of how, where and when consumers choose to use devices.

BuzzCity argues that the change will enable online advertisers to easily migrate to mobile and make digital media planning and buying simpler – especially when buying across multiple countries/territories.

It will also mean that it will be be easier for advertisers to monitor and fine-tune their online performance.

Lai continued, “Our experience of handling fragmented mobile devices makes the inclusion of PCs/ laptops relatively straightforward and is a natural next step for BuzzCity.”

BuzzCity continues to operate a mobile-first approach as mobile grows to be the primary surfing device for consumers.

Already profitable, BuzzCity, forecasts the desktop revenue will contribute an additional 20 per cent growth to the business during 2014, in addition to its global mobile revenue which has been growing at the rate of 50 per cent year-on-year.

Still building on relationship with Samsung

Wolfson now found inside audio hubs

UK audio chip maker Wolfson Microelectronics says its Q3 [2013] results were more or less in line with expectations. They came with reduced revenues of $43.9 million against $53 million for the same period last year [2012], and gross profits of 43 per cent compared to 47 per cent for Q3 2012. Earlier this month Wolfson completo shares nosedived after it admitted future revenues would be hit by cancellations at major customer, thought to be BlackBerry product.

Today [29th October 2013], Wolfson put a gloss on its revenue downturn by revealing this was countered by "strong customer adoption" of its latest high value audio hubs.

I goMo News has already covered such an audio hub in the shape of the igbloo from Stage One Technology here.

It added that it was now shipping to, or designed into, most of the leading indigenous mobile phone manufacturers in China.

Plus it continued to build on its relationship with Samsung, with its technology incorporated in the Galaxy widely range of smartphones, tablets and cameras.

The firm revealed it had also launched an audio card for the highly successful Raspberry Pi computer.

But despite the reassuring noises, Wolfson's shares slumped nearly 5 per cent on London's Aim market first thing this morning to 139 pence.

BBM for Android application is now updated

More Android devices now supported

After a preliminary version of BBM [BlackBerry Messenger] Android escaped in nature (see our previous story here), BlackBerry took nearly a month to restart the deployment of this application. But the company has released a new update of the application for official Android in a matter of days. This is very good news for some handset owners because the notes indicate that you one of the main reasons for support for additional devices Android update. So if you could not flee BBM before, it is now possible. The other reason mentioned is to provide fixes and performance improvements. We did not observe any bug, but we stumbled upon an Android operating system error when we try to install the update. It is the error "insufficient storage available".

The fact that BlackBerry has released the update so quickly indicates how seriously it is taking the establishment of BBM as leading social messaging in the mobile world.

We have already reported here that BBM was downloaded by 10 million users within 24 hours. But users of Android and the iPhone.

Looking for in Google Play today [28 October 2013], GoMo News could see that 10 million Android users have already downloaded BBM only. It could be anywhere between 10 m and 50 m downloads.

Now that 'insufficient storage available' error showed that Android. There are some very complex cures for this but we can offer a very simple. Kill some applications.

By default, for some reason, Android (this seems to still apply in our loan 4.1 Android phone Jelly Bean) wants to install apps on the phone's internal memory.

And being a big fan of the application, we've loads. So it is not good - as we thought at the beginning - merely accessory an external larger memory capacity (microSD) card. Android continues to insist on installing them in internal memory chips.

It is even when we went to the 'Setup' inside Android menu and select the option of storage. And he assured that (external) SD card is selected as the default writing drive.

So we find a very enlightening publication in JbNote site here that describes four possible outputs.

Three of them require 'rooting' Android device that GoMo News always warned here is only for brave people.

The fourth 'fix' require the use of Java and we will try to see that you one!

Meanwhile, we can only suggest that if you get insufficient storage available message kills some of the previously installed applications that you use never or almost never.

At least it allowed update customer BBM!

Indeed, we agree with Marc Willmore here that will install the Cache Cleaner app available free from Google Play, also help to free up some space.

However, would install that application when you've run out of space for apps?

£49 From Carphone Tablet - only a trick of Christmas or value for money?

If you can buy one, it is

Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat and in the United Kingdom the Carphone Warehouse transfers are all your tattoo...? Then, armed with everything from £49, your intrepid GoMo News hack decided to see if what said to be the tablet cheapest Great Britain - Carphone 7? Avoca - is really worth buying it or is more than a bit of garbage. But first the announcement. This came just before the weekend and received wide coverage as Carphone revealed how it was reducing the price of this particular tablet in half.  Therefore massively undercutting rivals Tesco and Argos device.

Director Ejecutivo de Carphone, Graham Stapleton, described the decision on Friday [25 October 2013], "we know that more than one third of purchases of the Tablet are for children and family use, but that one of the main barriers to not buy a Tablet cost".

So far so good.

And there is a tablet that runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, has a screen of 800 × 480 resolution, along with a 1 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM processor and comes with 8 GB of built-in storage, as well as a slot for Micro SD that supports 32 GB more.

The Avoca also has a camera front 0.3 megapixel camera to make video calling through services like Skype or to take photographs and it is compatible with Wi-Fi, connections of audio and an incorporated electronic book reader. Up to 8 hours of battery life is promised.

But the sting in the tail of the announcement was that the Avoca was available "only while stocks."

Thus, first on Saturday, we went GoMo to London's Oxford Street to splash the money.

First port of call was branch of marble Street of Carphone which even not sowing the Avoca but suggested a visit to the branch outside Selfridges store apartment, just a short walk to the corner.

And Lo!, just after 10, GoMo got hands one of the remaining devices - only two left, one that has been sold this morning shortly after the doors were opened.

Our verdict so far? Definitely good value for money even if struggle could to make sense of its English Council and woefully inadequate user manual Chinese.

An example - how to reset the Tablet: "When the Tablet is under the condition of the accident, use a small objects (sic) to short press reset button" - and so on.

Perhaps as an omen, Tablet collided shortly after GoMo was used, although the battery was indicating that you had even one-third of a load.

But once connected to the mains adapter supplied for six hours, was thank God in the land of the living and doing what it says on the package.

However, a little slow and confused with applications and widgets scattered like confetti across the home screen and other places, but otherwise worth £49.

Assuming that Carphone, having obtained a flare of publicity before Christmas, try to have more than a handful of sell. Here is its UK Store Locator.

By the way, the Avoca actually is SIM free so you can use it on any GSM network.

Details of an Apple iWatch emerge from India

AppId is over the quota AppId is over the quota

There’s a list of specs as well as some pictures

source: 91mobiles.com

Somebody working for 91Mobiles.com in India has leaked details of what seems to be an Apple smartwatch – codenamed the iWatch, to GoMo News. The author has described the information as “a concept watch”. We suspect, however, that the source is trying to be a bit too subtle. The leaked email came with two images (suitably emblazoned with the 91Mobiles.com logo, of course) purporting to show what the iWatch will look like. If it ever emerges, of course. We strongly suspect that there might be an element of chagrin in the timing of this leak, given that it coincides neatly as it does with Apple’s largely unexpected news – the launch of the new iPad mini and iPad Air.

Was the leak caused by engineers who had thought their work on the long-rumoured Apple smartwatch/phone would finally see the light of day and anger when it didn’t launch the product alongside two new tablets?

Anyway, we’ve decided to publish the images. The most interesting of which shows an iWatch projecting an image. Which would be particularly useful for FaceTime (IP video call) sessions.

This would be, of course, an excellent way of getting around the limitations of a smartwatch’s own screen or even a foldable shirt cuff screen as has been rumoured to be feasible.

We’ve printed the so-called leaked specification below. The one bit we really don’t believe is the ten days standby time.

Since battery problems are the greatest obstacle to smartwatches, of course.

Myabe some of this stuff will turn out to be real.

Specifications:

1.5? multi-touch display with 32-by-320 pixel resolution
Apple A7 chip
M7 motion co-processor
1 GB RAM memory
Three axis gyroscope & accelerometer
1.2 megapixel FaceTime camera with HD video recording
Bluetooth 4.0 Le + Wi-fi
iOS custom UI
Battery with standby time of up to ten days
Holographic projection

Adquant announces rollout of mobile engagement ads, mobile ads with video, and CPA bidding for mobile ads

AppId is over the quota AppId is over the quota

A Facebook-qualified Preferred Marketing Developer (PMD), Adquant’s rapid implementation of mobile ad improvements on Facebook drives immense value to clients

Press release

we worked around the clock - mccormack

October 25th 2013. Adquant has announced the full roll-out of mobile advertising upgrades. Recently, Facebook announced several new updates to their mobile advertising offering which included a new feature for mobile app ads, support for video creatives and cost-per-action (CPA) bidding. The rapid implementation of these new features gives Adquant’s clients an impressive mobile advertising toolset to drive app installs and maintain engagement with their existing customer base.

Facebook now has over 800 million active mobile users making it one of the largest platforms for mobile advertisers.

The new Facebook mobile advertising features will enable mobile advertisers to more effectively reach new customers while connecting with existing ones.

“We originally built Adquant to serve our internal needs as a game and mobile advertising agency. ”

“We know how important these improvements are to our customers, which is why we worked around the clock to support them as quickly as possible,” said Joe McCormack, CEO of Adquant.

As an Adquant client that utilises Facebook for advertising, Adir Ron, head of marketing at Win Social Games, said, “Facebook is, without a doubt, the best channel for mobile performance.”

“They are working closely with mobile advertisers to deliver exactly what the market is asking for.”

“Adquant’s rapid release of these features shows their knowledge and understanding of the market and proves once again that they are a great partner to work with.”

Mobile app ads for engagement and conversion offer app and game advertisers the ability to deep link from their ads directly to their apps that have been installed by users.

Video creatives for mobile ads allow advertisers to show off their apps in an engaging format found no other place in the mobile advertising arena.

CPA bidding greatly reduces the risk associated with user acquisition campaigns as now app and game publishers can pay per install or action based on their specific goals.

Adquant has accumulated an impressive record with Facebook and mobile advertising.

The platform drives 15 billion monthly ad views on Facebook and has more than 50 apps that have one million-plus users each.

Slight bump on decline of desktop discovered by 51Degrees.mobi

But it really is tablets & smartphones that are stealing most of the web traffic

If you want a litmus test that the desks are in decline due to tablets and smartphones, it is then clearly indicated in its decline in the dominance of the traffic Internet. As 5IDegrees.mobi has shown in his picture of the week, only in the last 20 months, tablet and smartphone devices have gradually chipped away at the web part of desktop and non-mobile devices. But the exception proves the rule and the month past [September 2013], desktop web traffic took a slight rebound, apparently at the expense of traffic from web phone smartphone and feature. 51Degrees speculates that this could rooted in growth in the product 'ultramobile' category.

Until that slight traffic signal - the small rise of desktop web traffic showing an increase of 0.13 percent in September 2013, part of desks of traffic was in the low 70 cents per Internet.

That compares with smartphones with around 18 percent. But while the desktop stole traffic from smartphones, tablet web traffic percentage increased at an average rate of 0.26 percent.

If this trend continues over the next 6 months, says 51Degress.mobi, tablets could be approaching a fee of 10 percent of the total web traffic.

This is surprising as the latest figures produced by analysts, Gartner, predicting shipments worldwide tablet grow 53.4 per cent in 2013, with shipments reaching 184 million units.

Meanwhile, Gartner said PC shipments are declining - predicted down 11.2 percent in shipments by 2012.

It is lower than the previous forecast of Gartner in April of 2013 when it said that it expected PCs to decline 7.3 per cent in 2013.

Tablets seem to be the type of unique device affected by the increase in desktop in the last 20 months.

Will we see an increase in quota of web in early 2014, with an end-of-year increase in sales of predicted tablet, asks 51Degrees?

Anyway, what these mysterious 'ultramobiles' that are helping the desktop to increase your web traffic share a little?

The answer seems to be portable lightweight and portable capable of performing a full desktop OS - like Surface Pro Microsoft tablet, for example.

Thus, in effect, tablets are taking a part of web traffic at both ends of the scale.

Restaurante descubrimiento app no logra impresionar GoMo

Perhaps because we are Londoners who we found... no

We found only when you turn on wi-fi

Here at GoMo towers we were invited to try out a new application called volant of the company of the same name, although it looked like a mobster named Anqa basically developed the real Android application is a restaurant discovery application for Londoners. F claims that the application offers diners to access availability in real time as well as the possibility of special offers from local restaurants. A very powerful combination. But we were far from impressed. Here is a clue. The company called 11 famous restaurants in London as participating but had only heard of one of them - the Royal Horse guards. And its location was poor.

We are going to get out of the way first bit location, we will? In essence, our cat B15 Android handset loan, initially settled us a few meters up the road.

We had a location on GPS and cellular network. When we convert instead of Wi-fi found us correctly.

Surely, if you are out and looking for a restaurant of last minute, are not connected to the Wi-fi hotspot nearest?

Also while we're moaning, for some reason, did not work the short URL which should have led us directly to Rufl application on Google Play. Fortunately, we guess what was the application.

Volant was conceived by the experienced entrepreneur Aaron Ross and is backed by investors including Karen Hanton - an entrepreneur and founder of toptable.com.

Rufl has the power for owners to manage their inventory of table in real time along with the update of special offers and discounts, allowing restaurants to advertise additional capacity at the tap of a few buttons.

Significantly, offers and incentives offered by restaurants only will be visible to potential local diners looking for food there and then, leaving no mark on the web. You should then see some bargains.

We believe that the reservation in real time of this app will attract users. Especially those who are - in fact, trying to find out where are all the best places to observe.

The application is in its infancy so we do not really see any offer. Unfortunately, it also meant that we could not find any restaurant reviews, either.

Aaron Ross, CEO of lentil, commented: "reservations spontaneous movement is a growing trend and smartphones enabling this in a way that was not possible before."

"Volant helps people decide what and where you would like to eat from your smartphone in your Pocket", he added.

(F) with more than 450 restaurants aunched already enrolled including Michelin restaurants. It also offers a wide variety of cuisines, the ranges of prices and barrel tables.

We conclude that although Dancewear for not I GoMo News, there are probably many London wannabe emerging will to use this application.

WIT and Acision join forces to enhance the messaging experience with new integrated solution for Android and Apple OS

Press release

breaking the OTT service fragmentation barrier - sullivan

October 24th 2013. WIT Software, a leading provider of rich and unified communications for Mobile Operators, has announced the launch of an Integrated Messaging Solution, WIT Blackbird Messaging, in partnership with Acision. This solution integrates IP messaging and SMS/MMS messaging in the same composer, much like the iMessage solution from Apple, but it will be available for Android OS and iOS. In the case of Android this mechanism will be supported with an App that will be installed in the smartphone, while in the case of iPhone it requires the integration with the infrastructure of the Mobile Network Operator [MNO].

This implementation of integration messaging is fully compliant with the RCS Blackbird specification from GSMA.

WIT Software believes this is a major step to Rich Communications, extending RCS technology to a broader target.

WIT Blackbird Messaging is the first integrated messaging product available in the European market, providing consumers a seamless rich communication experience and Operators a faster time-to-market and wider reach.

This partnership with Acision will enable WIT to deliver WIT Blackbird Messaging to other mobile platforms, together with Acision Fusion.

“WIT brings to market a product that competes directly with the iMessage concept from Apple. However, it will be available to all the Android smartphones in the market as well, and will take advantage of the interoperability provided by the RCS specification,” stated Luis Silva, CEO of WIT Software.

“This new product launch reinforces WIT’s commitment to the RCS roadmap, starting with the delivery of a key part of the Blackbird specification, and moving on to Crane, Dove and Eagle in the upcoming future.”

By integrating the WIT Software front end with the Acision Fusion messaging backend, WIT can now deliver a fully integrated messaging platform which enables mobile operators to move away from fragmented, silo approaches to deploying messaging services and replace these with a single, converged solution.

This reduces the cost and complexity on their infrastructure, while also enabling the rapid development and deployment of a new, seamless IP messaging services and RCS, alongside SMS, MMS and voice messaging, therefore enhancing the overall messaging service experience.

JF Sullivan, EVP Product Management at Acision, said, “Working alongside Acision, WIT is now able to launch a fully integrated messaging solution which works across mobile operating systems and messaging platforms, breaking the OTT service fragmentation barrier.”

“Together we can provide truly seamless messaging through interconnect with the global SMS and MMS community, as well as social networking and chat services, extending the existing SMS user experience to RCS and other rich-content services. Innovating in this way changes the dynamics of messaging.”

Nokia finally gets into phablets & tablets

AppId is over the quota AppId is over the quota

Industry comments on six new Nokias launches

At the first Nokia World since Microsoft made public its intention to acquire Nokia, the company announced six new devices. In the Lumia and Asha ranges. Finally,
the Finnish based company has embraced two of the fastest-growing form factors in today’s device market: – phablets and tablets. The Lumia 1520 is an attractive-looking phablet with high-end specifications. Nokia’s lower-priced phablet, Lumia 1320, is also an intriguing proposition. However, Nokia’s first tablet (based on Windows RT) the Lumia 2520 is significant because it won’t be offered as a Wi-fi only device. Only one that runs via LTE.

According to IDC analyst, John Delaney, “The timing of this device is especially good for the European market – many operators are ramping up their LTE coverage.”

he believes that they could do well, “Especially if they are positioned effectively for business users looking to replace Blackberry devices.”

Malik Saadi, principal analyst at Informa Telecoms & Media, concurs, “The strategic choice of Nokia not to offer a Wi-Fi-only variant of the Lumia 2520 is certainly an attractive proposition to operators that want to promote LTE data plans for tablets.”

Three new touchscreen Asha models, 500, 502 and 503, join the 501 in Nokia’s latest range aimed at emerging markets such as India.

Crucially, all new Ashas support Wi-fi along with the key social/communications apps.

These already included Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Viber, Line and WeChat – and Nokia has recently announced that WhatsApp available, too.

However, it is the choice of a 10? format with the 2520 which Saadi finds the most controversial decision.

“Nokia could have gone with the same strategy but using a smaller form-factor tablet, let’s say around 8 inches”, he explained.

“The competitive price of this type of device could be even more attractive for both operators and end users. These devices are a lot more portable and more convenient to carry compared with 10” devices.”

Why it has taken Nokia so ling to realise it was wasting the chance to flog tablets to mobile network operators is a puzzle to GoMo News.

If China’s Lenovo does actually take over BlackBerry, will we finally see a decent tablet to replace the ageing PlayBook?

Ofcom moves to protect phone users from mid contract price hikes

AppId is over the quota AppId is over the quota

But ruling could mean no more cheap iPhones

Subsidised handsets in the UK could soon be a thing of the past following a decision by regulator Ofcom allowing phone users to ditch their “fixed price” contracts if there is a price hike.
Until now customers on contracts involving monthly billing could only cancel if price rises caused “material detriment,” a legally untested term, otherwise they were invariably obliged to continue paying until the deal ends or face an exit penalty.
But, after nearly a year of deliberations, Ofcom has ruled the practice is unfair to consumers and that in future “fixed” should mean exactly that – and, if it doesn’t, customers should be free to take on a contract elsewhere.
But already the phone industry is warning that the changes – due to come into effect in three months’ time – could result in an end to subsidised phones, particularly more expensive brands such as the iPhone, if operators can’t recoup costs through the contracts.
Commented Ovum telecoms analyst Matthew Howett, “The operators have been critical of this during the consultation, saying that this could spell the end of the subsidised handsets.”
Ofcom, which had been deluged with complaints from more than a thousand disgruntled users, is also extending the mid-contract price rise ban to cover fixed line and broadband contracts. More on its ruling can be found here.

But the report, from a Reuters correspondent who visited one of the company’s plants near Taipei, has been angrily denied by HTC which insists it “is not shutting down nor has plans to sell any of factory assets.”

Guest Post: Mobile phone trackers – making it legal

AppId is over the quota AppId is over the quota

By Jessica Caroll – a writer who works with Mobistealth

Warning: this article contains advice which may be illegal outside the USA

BYOD [Bring Your Own Device] is no longer a controversial issue. With people becoming more and more inclined towards technology outside office, it is inevitable that the tech-savvy are going to use and abuse it in the office premises. In such a situation, employers often need to rely on a mobile phone tracker. There is no ‘official’ definition of BYOD as there is little US case law referring to it. Sifting through legal terms, however, ‘legally-defensible security’ and ‘reasonable security’ support these phenomena of employee monitoring. It makes employers entitled to take steps to protect the company’s systems and networks.

It is understandable that all devices given to the employees are being monitored be it by the networks or mobile phones.

If employees feel uncomfortable regarding this setting, they are free to bring their own mobile phone to work.

When the employee is aware that his or her work and usage of technology is being monitored, he/she will automatically be inclined towards the playing-it-safe zone.

With BYOD, employers now have an almost dictatorial authority on company-owned mobile phones.

They are free to: -

Install any security software on the mobile phoneEncrypt company data on the mobile phoneMonitor the mobile phone and keep a look-out for any kind of misuseKeep a check on how the mobile phone connects to the company’s networks

That might not be as easy as typing all these pointers is. Executives will not exactly like their smartphones being monitored, regardless of being company-owned or personal, let alone getting them to agree to the pointers above.

Let’s look at an example showing how BYOD can have serious implications.

Frank’s [a fictitious person] company had been sued by the competitor for stealing trade secrets. His smartphone was allegedly being used in the crime.

He had been sent by his company to a trade show where he sees a product in the competitor’s booth which is in line with the something his company is trying to get a patent for.

Moving over to the next stall, he takes a picture of something that interests him. Someone in the competitor’s booth assumes that he has taken a picture of the product in that booth.

And here BYOD jumps-in, all dressed up in the legal attire.

If Frank’s’ smartphone is being monitored fully, the company would have doubtlessly know about what activities have been carried out on the smartphone.

Frank will be defended by the company as innocent. This situation might also have its own implications.

As Frank is using his personal smartphone, his device might not be fully monitored by the company. A way out for him is being proven innocent by turning over the hard drive for all the captured data.

There is conditional relationship between employers and employees. There is BYOD to fill in the gaps of this relationship.

BYOD has its own set of uses and implications, though it is being widely used, nowadays.

Rumoured  to be building smartphone line for Amazon

HTC One

Financially, HTC is in dire straits as the once-mighty manufacturer is fighting to stay relevant in a market in which Samsung has become the runaway leader, writes our Indian correspondent – Asif Shaik.  HTC, on the other hand, is having a disastrous year even after launching the HTC One, which critics agree to be the best smartphone of the year, thanks to excellent all-round performance and design. Samsung still managed to sell over 40 million units of Galaxy S4 due to better marketing, supply-chain and pricing strategy while HTC was still stuck with manufacturing and assembly issues.

It looks like HTC has learnt nothing from earlier mistakes, as its latest offering, the HTC One Max, has been launched a month after Samsung’s Galaxy Note III became available.

Another concerning trend is that HTC mobile prices have not been in line with what Samsung offers. See Indian prices on the MySmartPrice web site here.

Samsung is known to offer attractive financing schemes, while HTC has had price increases for its devices in the last few months.

Furthermore, HTC cannot come close to might of Samsung’s marketing and advertising division.

However,  this is an area that the Taiwanese manufacturer has looked to fix by recruiting the likes of Robert Downey Jr.

However, it looks like the move is not making any significant difference to HTC’s bottomline.

The organisation saw many of its high-level management head out the door this year.

Amidst this, HTC suffered its first quarterly loss in Q2 2013, after which many industry analysts (including GoMo News) predicted that it would admit defeat and look for a buyer.

This year has already seen stalwarts like Nokia and BlackBerry look like being acquired. Peter Chou, the passionate leader HTC, has mentioned that the brand has to do something different to maintain its position.

HTC’s chairwoman, Cher Wang, has mentioned that a buyout is not on the cards anytime soon, and that the manufacturer will continue to persevere in the face of calamity.

However, the going will certainly get tougher in the short-term, as it was announced recently that current CEO Peter Chou is relinquishing a few duties back to HTCs chairwoman as he looks to be more involved in the manufacturer’s product portfolio and innovation.

For now, HTC is looking to mitigate further setbacks by undertaking a new strategy, one in which it redoubles its efforts in emerging markets like China and India.

These are counties in which HTC has enjoyed a pinch of success so far.

As such, it has launched three additional devices in their mid-range priced Desire series, which includes the Desire 709D, Desire 7060 and Desire 7088 in China.

These devices feature a 5-inch qHD screen, 1.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 200 CPU, 1 GB RAM, 8 GB internal memory, 8-megapixel camera at the back, 2.1-megapixel front shooter and a 2,100 mAh battery.

The devices differ in their design, and are targeted toward a younger audience. HTC understands market scenarios in China well, and has included dual-SIM functionality as well as micro-SD card slots in these devices.

The HTC One Max, was unveiled in China, which signifies a shift in focus for the manufacturer.

Instead of battling it out on a global stage against the likes of Samsung, HTC is sticking to countries where it has a faithful user base, which adds to more revenues.

Also, it has been rumoured earlier this week that Amazon is looking to build a smartphone line, and is collaborating with HTC to build these devices.

That should come as a welcome sign for HTC, which began its life as a contract device manufacture for the likes of Sony and network carriers around the world.

However, time is running out fast. The manufacturer is losing market share, consumers and high-level executives. If it needs to regain lost ground, it needs to do so fast.

BlackBerry Facebook "Secret talks" suggestion at the last minute bidding

Deadline for deciding on Prem Watsa offer only a few days away

The takeover battle for troubled Canadian smartphone BlackBerry pioneer has taken another turn, with news on the social networking site Facebook could now be in the tender.
There are only two business days before BlackBerry Board must decide on the original $4.7 billion of former director Prem Watsa offer, although it has yet to name who is in your consortium. Other rumoured suitors include Google, Samsung, Chinese giant Lenovo. Co-founder Mike Lazaridis and even the former CEO of Apple John Sculley is mentioned.
But with the next term Monday [November 04, 2013] fast imminent, and at that point the BlackBerry Board will have to decide if to take Watsa $9 a share, the Wall Street Journal offering now reports a possible offer of discount on Facebook.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg of the networking site is already registered as he says he wants to Facebook "on as many phones as possible", but earlier this year suffered a setback when the first HTC, is intended to be a showcase for the Facebook custom Android software, a success among consumers has been demonstrated.
According to the newspaper, meanwhile, BlackBerry executives flew to California last week to participate in secret talks with their counterparts from Facebook. The news has rekindled speculation that Facebook wants to build its own smartphone and, if technology did so with BlackBerry, you could skip immediately towards the realms of smartphone protagonists.
At the same time, it is believed, Facebook might decrease its dependence on hardware such as Apple and Samsung manufacturers distribute their software to collect data from users. Only Google is intended for a particular threat as it tries to woo his army of Android Facebook users and to your own Google Plus Network website. According to IDC, Android was installed in 74 per cent of smartphones shipped during the second quarter of this year, Google is giving a great launching pad for other services - including Facebook - that are distributed as part of the working platform.

Great mystery of Nokia N73 India reveals partially

Guys should really be saving for a new Asha

Despite the fact that the real story is written again in 2008, one of the most popular news of GoMo News articles is here 'Update Nokia N73 Software'. To date never we had been able to work exactly why - especially because it is so old phone. But now thanks to Bruce Molyneux, a freelance app Designer, we believe that in part the mystery is solved. The Nokia N73 is a device based on Symbian OS. And the popular Instant Messenger WhatsApp application will run under the Symbian. But, as Molyneux explained to GoMo News, although WhatsApp should support phones Nokia S60 as the N73, in fact requires S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 and more beyond (S60 3.1 +). Unfortunately the N73 is S60 3.0. So the N73 is currently not supported. Therefore the massive interest in updating the N73. If only you could upgrade it to S60 3.1, you could run WhatsApp. Joy!

What is the solution? Well, Bruce seems to be working on a solution that would allow WhatsApp run on the N73. Obviously, we will let you know if it succeeds.

Meanwhile, what can N73 owners you do? Well, the obvious solution is to change the headphones. Interestingly, WhatsApp can run on mobile phones based on the previous S40 handset Nokia (series 40) design.

Here is a list of some of them - Nokia C3-00 / C3-01 / X 2 - 00 / X 2-01 / X 3-02 / 201 / 300 / 302 / 303 / 306 / 311. If you get one of these go to the page of download WhatsApp Series 40 here.

Another option would be to upgrade from a phone of Nokia Nokia S60 3rd edition to something a little more modern. As Symbian 5th Edition, Symbian ^ 3, Symbian Anna, or device Symbian Belle.

Don't fall into parody update for the Nokia N97. We have already covered here.  It is fake, OK?

What GoMo News actually recommended is that N73 users consider switching to one of the new Asha models Nokia announced last week [October 2013].

The new models are the 500, 502 and 503 which are all real successors to the 501 Asha. Anyway, in the new release of the model, Nokia trumpeted how many of its handset users love WhatsApp.

Apparently, WhatsApp daily registered 250,000 users through mobile phones Nokia - add to around 350 million active users Whatsapp around the globe.

Our Indian correspondent, Asif Shaikh, had already outlined some of the possibilities for Nokia update here.

Suggest our Indian readers visit the web site Mysmartprice (where he works Asif) here for the latest deals on Nokia phones that you can run WhatsApp.

Guest post: 5 ways to make your business successful m-commerce in emerging markets

by Kinjal Adeshara, a blogger working with Infotech Cygnet

They are changing worldwide trends in sales and e-commerce is growing at a furious pace. According to eMarketer here, global e-commerce sales have surpassed 1.2 trillion dollars, and emerging markets are behind the continued expansion of e-commerce. E-commerce has matured in Western markets, and is gradually reaching a saturation point. But, there is a huge scope for e-commerce and m-commerce in emerging markets such as China, India, Russia and Brazil [BRIC countries]. Most of the growth in digital sales will come from emerging markets.

Intelligent mobile revolution has made it possible for BRIC customers to access the Internet anytime, anywhere.

These countries have a strong infrastructure, a growing middle class and increased spending power.

All the necessary elements for a boom in e-commerce are present and Internet sales in these markets are on the rise.

The domain of mobile search in these places means that you will have to focus more on m-commerce during the creation of stores online for these markets.

The question - is your model of development of e-commerce ready for this? Are you fully prepared to take advantage of the rise of the next trade in emerging markets?

If not, it is time to formulate a strategy to sell in these markets. Watching the following factors will help your business online thrive in these markets.

Local language is a must

While there are a number of people in these countries who can understand English, the most used and knows only the local language.

As it's customers with baja-competencia in English, it is best to make sure that the content of your store is written in local languages.

In countries like India, several regions have different languages - so you need to be sure that customerd have a clear choice to select the language of your choice.

Store Locator options

As we have seen in United States and United Kingdom, most customers used their phones to research products and services. However, is still only a fraction of them actually buy goods through your mobile device.

Why not use their desktops or visit the store directly. A large number of consumers in emerging markets is connected to the Internet only through their smartphones - don't have PCs or laptops.

So after researching for products or services, visit the physical store to make a purchase. Offering services on its mobile app or mobile web site store locator, you can improve your chances of sales.

Social network integration

Young adults in emerging nations are pioneers. They are familiar with e-commerce and m-commerce and feel free to make the most of your shopping online.

By integrating social networking with your online store, increasing the possibilities of these clients share comments and post comments about their products.

As the social media they are extremely popular in all emerging markets, you need to integrate your shop with social media and also to formulate a clear and effective social media marketing strategy.

Discounts and special offers and email marketing

Consumers in countries such as India and China are worried about the costs and are experts in the research of products to find the best bargain.

Most online retailers struggle to build any loyalty with users, regardless of the country they are selling, because customers just want to buy the product at the best price.

So, by offering promotional discounts, you can grab the attention of users.

Email marketing aimed at customers interested in the use of coupons and discounts also can lead visitors to your store and increase sales.

You can also integrate this strategy with location-based and contextual ads to improve the efficiency of the whole process.

Show all products on the mobile website

As noted above, Internet access through smart phones allows a number of users to the online store. These people do not have access to conventional as PCs and portable devices.

Then, you cannot create a truncated mobile version of your e-commerce store. All products in the shop on main line need to be displayed in the mobile web site.

The mobile website or mobile application should offer everything that makes the version of the web site. If you don't want to develop a mobile separate ecommerce website, go to a web site responds.

Ending

While the underlying principles of online businesses remain the same, different markets have their peculiarities.

As a supplier of solutions for m-commerce, keeping your eyes open to these five ideas, improve your chances of success in emerging markets.
