MMS is still a communication platform popular with more than half of United States and United Kingdom mobile subscribers using the technology in conjunction with OTT applications

MMS is popular on Valentine's dayOn December 19, 2013. The research of the global leader of mobile messaging, Acision, confirms the current popularity of MMS as usual messaging and content in the United Kingdom and the USA sharing service. The annual results, now in its second year, shows 51% of British and 58 per cent of North America smartphone users currently using the platform. This makes the second tool of most popular Messaging after SMS in the USA and in third place behind SMS and Facebook Messenger in the United Kingdom. MMS is most popular with women transatlantic, with 54 per cent of United Kingdom and 61 per cent of women in the United States using the platform compared to 47% and 55% of men respectively.
The annual report, conducted by Vanson Bourne, is considered the most comprehensive study on global trends in the messages.
Surveying 1,000 users of smartphones in both countries, the investigation revealed that the MMS is used at least once per week by about six of seven United States subscribers (87%) and two thirds of UK subscribers (66 percent).
Daily use of MMS is stronger in the United States, with 38 per cent of users MMS sending at least one 'image text' every day compared to 22% in the United Kingdom.
According to JF Sullivan, CMO and Executive Vice President of product development with Acision, "MMS is considered to be a medium that people's confidence to communicate with their nearest and dearest, the vast majority of users MMS (84 per cent in the US and 79 per cent in the United Kingdom) using technology to share special or funny moments ' with friends and family."
"Our results also suggest that the MMS is seen as a more intimate than other messaging applications".
The research showed that respondents in the United Kingdom only communicate with an average of eight people through the platform while in United States this rises to 12.
Both are lower SMS, which is used to communicate with an average of 13 to 15 people in the United Kingdom and the United States respectively.
Periods of holidays and special occasions often cause an increase in activity MMS, with 47 percent of Britons and 53 per cent of Americans to send MMS for Valentine's day, new year at Christmas, for example.
With the growing number of mobile users looking to share visual content instantly, to show what they are experiencing, Acision predicts that there will be an increase in the MMS traffic during the festive period.
Acision saw those peaks of traffic from MMS, of up to 424 per cent, during the winter holiday period last year--specifically on December 24 (Christmas Eve), 25 December (Christmas day) and December 31 (Christmas Eve).
Comparison of data from different countries in Europe, America of the North (NA), LATAM and APAC, Acision found a significant increase in the use of MMS worldwide, particularly the exchange of video content.
With video and 'self-portraits' increasingly popular in 2013, is expected that figures for last year will be overcome in a few weeks time.
Sullivan concluded, "our results show that the MMS is still form part of people's everyday mobile experience".
"While the advent of social media and messaging OTT is increasing, they are still not capable of generating the same income as MMS which, as part of the family of traditional messaging, is still the largest source of a package of revenue."
"We hope to see a repeat of the stem of MMS traffic last year during the period of Christmas, as users choose to share intimate moments with their loved ones."
"Operators should follow to seize this opportunity and invest in new ways to ensure that MMS is a platform for efficient and affordable messaging to all mobile subscribers."
MMS key research findings include:-
• 51 percent of United Kingdom and 58 percent of U.S. mobile users currently uses MMS services
• The platform is more popular among the women of the two countries. In the USA, 61 percent of the women using the service compared to 55% of men. In the United Kingdom this figure is 54 per cent and 47 per cent respectively.
• 66% of United Kingdom and 87 per cent of the users we MMS uses technology once the week or more. This represents the daily use of 22 per cent in the United Kingdom and 38 percent in the United States.
• The most popular reason for using MMS is to share "moments funny or special" - with 84 percent of United States and 79 percent of the users of United Kingdom MMS using the technology to do so
• 44% of respondents in the United Kingdom prevent send MMS because of the high price compared with 19 per cent of users of United States
• 40 per cent of Americans and 32 percent of Britons to use MMS when on holiday or abroad
• Special occasions cause a wave MMS with 47 percent of Britons and 53 per cent of the users of the U.S. by sending an MMS on occasions such as Christmas, new year or Valentine's day
